BACKGROUND
Seeing an early love of sports in their young child, parents Cat and Dan Schaffrick exposed Maddy to a variety of different activities. While Maddy excelled at most any sport she participated in, it was one fateful day as a 7-year-old on a snowy mountain-top that would forever change her life.
Currently ranked 9th in the world in her division, Maddy Shaffrick is 15-year-old, teen snowboarding phenom with already 8 years of competing to her credit.
Her hard-work, dedication and fearlessness have led to success in Halfpipe and Slopestyle, as well as Giant Slalom and Freestyle.
In 2008, Maddy made her professional debut, proving she was a definite force to be reckoned with. That first year alone, Maddy took home 4th Place at the USSA Grand Prix in Copper Mountain, CO (a field stacked heavily with the biggest names in the sport), won a 3rd Place spot on the podium at the USSA Grand Prix in Killington, VT, made an exciting appearance at the X Games and won both the Best Trick and Most Progressive Rider awards at the CoverGirl Snow Angels Invitational in Snowmass, CO.
Never wavering in spirit or dedication, Maddy balances both the work and social pressures of attending high school with the lifestyle of a traveling professional athlete.
Maddy says that snowboarding became a “way of life” the year that she turned pro and that is something she will do for the rest of her life.
X Games Gold Medalist Torah Bright of Australia has taken notice of young Maddy and has this to say about her: "I give [her] a few years and she might be winning the US Open Women’s! It’s crazy to think of where snowboarding will be with the young incredible riders coming up!"
Of herself, Maddy says that she is an average teenage girl who loves to hang out with her friends and family, wakes up every day to go to public school and play sports… until snowboard season that is. During snowboard season Maddy trains every single day and more often than not is traveling to new and exciting places to compete.
When not in school or on the mountain, Maddy loves to listen to techno music, watch Channing Tatum movies and eat Mexican food.
